One of Houston’s fastest growing companies is now ranked among the world’s most innovative.
Bio-chemical manufacturing juggernaut Solugen is No. 2 on Fast Company’s 2022 list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies. Solugen has developed a green method of turning corn syrup into a feedstock to create industrial chemicals thereby eliminating the emissions tied to the petrochemical process.
Founded in 2016, Solugen is one of Houston’s latest “unicorns,” those companies that reach a valuation of more than $1 billion. The firm currently valued at $1.8 billion closed a $357 million Series C round of funding toward the end of last year. Solugen is headquartered in southwest Houston sits on the site of a former chemical plant.
According to Fast Company: “The carbon-negative process and Solugen’s ability to sell flexible amounts of chemicals to companies looking to lower their own footprint have helped the company make inroads in a traditionally slow-moving industry.”
A September article from Axios reported that Solugen employs roughly 115 workers, mostly in Houston. But that is likely to expand as the company plans to double its R&D capacity by 2024.
Solugen is a prime example of both the advanced manufacturing and climatetech-focused companies Houston is looking to attract and grow in the region. The climatetech incubator Greentown Labs, which opened its doors in Midtown last year, is already fostering the next generation of innovative startups striving to solve real world challenges.
Metro Houston is currently home to more than 6,700 manufacturing firms employing more than 223,000 workers.
