Practice Listening and Other Keys to Better Networking

The saying goes it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. But in an increasingly noisy world of social media notifications and niche online groups to build your “network,” a balanced approach to making contacts might be your best strategy. That’s how Partnership Ambassador Melissa Vela tackles networking. Vela is a passionate networker, often meeting with business prospects outside of the office at least three times a week in addition to her role at BBVA Compass. “A combination of meeting prospects in person with digital follow up is what works best for me.” We chatted with Vela to get more tips on networking.

What are your secrets to success when working a room?

You have to take the initiative to go up to someone, shake their hand, and introduce yourself! Remember, this is not about you.  It’s about them. Ask what they do and how you can help them. Know how to exit the conversation and move on to the next prospect.

How do you balance digital and face to face networking?

I think digital and face to face networking go hand in hand. I think face to face [networking] is extremely important but must be followed up digitally. You must have an online presence to be known. In this digital age, if you are not networking online, you are not known.  Now more than ever, we turn to social media for validation and credibility.  Your online presence should reflect your brand and the experiences you can offer.

How do you approach networking at the Partnership?

Take advantage of the GHP! This is the place where Houston business happens. Find a way to get involved. But you must prepare and know who will be in the room. Be relevant. The Partnership is great at having key business leaders speaking. This is your opportunity to introduce yourself. It’s now or never.

Tell us about your experience as an ambassador.

I wanted to become an ambassador because I knew this was the place to be and get connected. I was on the bench (waiting list) to be an ambassador for several months. I was proactive during this time and made sure I was at every event I could possibly be at. Being an ambassador has honestly transformed my professional career, sales approach, and size of network. It has helped me tremendously and I am now a Life Member [of the Partnership]!

What advice can you give to new Houstonians? Is there a Houston “way” to networking?

The Houston way of networking always seems to include bonding over food, traffic, and the crazy weather.
